Bites & Blisters What to do for Summer Issues

Ah! Summer! It is here at last (or soon anyway), and we need to review our natural options for two issues that can be aggrevating for us during Summer.

Insect Bites & Stings:

Nothing is more troublesome during those lazy, hazy, days of Summer than pesky insects and the results of their interaction with humans. The best defense is a strong offense! Though there are many products on the market that promise to keep you bite and sting free all season long, one wonders what harm some of those unpronouncable ingredients may cause. This question is even more disturbing when it comes to our precious children. I have tried quite a few products and highly recommend using a natural solution rather than a chemical one that has questionable properties to them.

The product I recommend at the top of my list? Burt's Bees has an excellent product that repels most nasty bugs that make our Summer fun a game of Dodge Ball - er... Bug!

Click this link to view "Burt's Bees Herbal Insect Repellent" This is 100% natural and is safe for the youngest of children.

To protect your small children from Sunburns try Burt's Bees Baby Bee SPF 30 100% Natural Sunscreen Stick, 0.7 ounces It is an all natural product that does an excellent job of protecting even the most delicate skin.

Sunburn Pain

What about the adults? We need to be careful of sun as well. The sun, after all, does not discriminate when it comes to sending us far too much solar radiation that can cause some pretty serious and/or painful burns.

Many of us forget HOW we are getting too much sun exposure. You may think that you are safe in the car, since you have a tinted windshield. Not everyone is aware that that tint only blocks Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays and NOT the more harmful, cancer-causing Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays.

Recommendations for ample protection from ALL Ultraviolet rays are as follows:

SPF 50 - However, this only applies to UVB rays. In order to be sure your sunscreen is going to protect you against the more dangerous UVA rays, be sure they products you buy have the wording on the label: "Broad Spectrum."

The ingredients to look for that assures you it is indeed "Broad Spectrum" should include:

  • zink oxide

  • titanium oxide

  • avobenzone

  • ecamsule

  • oxybenzone

If these five ingredients are not in the product you are looking at, it is not Broad Spectrum and will not protect you from the harmful UVA rays.

Though I do not like using anything with long chemical names, those of us older than 20 have been exposed to far worse chemicals in our lifetime. These are relatively safe and far easier to deal with than the possible melanoma (skin cancer) caused by exessive exposure to UVA rays.

The best prevention is to stay out of the sun during those times of day when the rays are most intense. Early morning ( Before 10 a.m. ) and evening (after 7 p.m.) are the safest times to be out in the direct sun. If you must be out during the hottest, most intense times of day, at least wear a hat that can protect your face, and sheer, light weight long sleeved coverings for your arms.

Forewarned is fore-armed when it comes to protecting your health. Stay safe and enjoy your Summer!
